My Secret War by Mary Pope Osborne6/28/2023 ![]() Harmless, but it did warrant an eyeroll from me. We also get a little bit of author’s indulgence through the inclusion of a true story of Nazi saboteurs who landed on Long Island and were caught-how they were caught, in this novel, is what I’m referring to as the author’s indulgence. There’s even a brief mention of Madeline’s mother working at a factory to help in the absence of the men who usually worked there. Rationing, children’s clubs, spying, secret codes, and anonymous tips are all covered in this novel. My Secret War tries to be different from the others by detailing, perhaps the best out of all the WWII DA books, the fervor and excitement to help the war effort. An important piece of history, definitely, but after reading it four times, it starts wearing a bit thin. And with the exception of One Eye Laughing, The Other Weeping, they all take place around the same time frame and detail the beginning of the US’s entrance into the war with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Rating: 2/5 Dear America has a LOT of WWII stories. My Secret War: The World War II Diary of Madeline Beck, by Mary Pope Osborne, was published in 2000 by Scholastic. ![]() Connie willis to say nothing of the dog6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Even if it cost you your freedom, your life, your youth. To do something for someone or something you loved - England or Shakespeare or a dog or the Hodbins or history - wasn't a sacrifice at all. Like I must have looked there in the rubble with Sir Godfrey, my hand pressed against his heart. Like Mike must have looked in Kent, composing engagement announcements and letters to the editor. ![]() ![]() Like Eileen had looked, telling Polly she'd decided to stay. ![]() As if he was where he wanted to be, doing what he wanted to do. Like Colin helping Mr Dunworthy across the wreckage. Like Ernest Shackleton, setting out in that tiny boat across icy seas. He looked like Captain Faulknor must have looked, lashing the ships together. He looked instead like Marjorie had looked telling Polly she'd joined the Nursing Service, like Mr Humphreys had looked filling buckets with water and sand to save Saint Paul's, like Miss Laburnum had looked that day she came to Townsend Brothers with the coats. Hogfather is just as funny as the other Discworld books and just as crazy. The wizards of Unseen University is getting ready for the traditional Hogwatch eating frenzy and… Meanwhile DEATHs granddaughter tries to find the real Hogfather and/or Teatime. I'll try anyway: Then Hogfather is "killed" by the assassin Teatime, DEATH (that's his name) decides to take over and try to keep up the faith, by putting on a white beard, delivering gifts and doing the old "Ho Ho Ho" bit. ![]() I kind of overdosed on Pratchett a few years ago and haven't read anything of his for a while.Īs it often is with Pratchett's books, they are rather hard to describe or even retell – it's very easy to fail miserably to convey just what really goes on and just how funny it all is. The first Pratchett book that I've read in a long time. ![]() Seoul Circuit by Tamara Boyens6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The author of this book, tragically, passed away early in 2017 after a failed surgical procedure, but this book rises as her testament to what we all hope for when the odds and fate are against us. ![]() ![]() Still, with all the challenges this casino-owner fashionista runs into, she has time for love. She’s in a race against time, and the reader is turning pages so fast, it leaves one breathless. The main character, a Technicolor lesbian named Jin, is a prize-her wry, mater-of- fact observations as the neural systems in her body begin to fail are classic cool. A joy from start to finish.Ģ) Although Seoul Circuit is billed by its publisher (Supposed Crimes), as Cyberpunk, this well-written book is written in that taut, tense, tender style that most resembles Scandinavian Noir, but with locales in Korea and Pasadena. The cyberpunk setting is well-thought-out and impeccably detailed. The main character is smart and bold, with just the right amount of concealed vulnerability. 1) This nonstop, fast-paced cyberpunk thriller really knocks it out of the park. ![]() ![]() So, I spent some of this rainy day doing research on the internet. I wanted to see who wrote this book since they used various writers in the Hardy Boys series. See, it's a perfect book for a rainy day. Storm clouds begin gathering, and next they are taking cover in a shed. They run out of the house and back to their bikes. Once inside they hear a loud eerie shrieking sound. They park their bikes under some trees and walk up to the house. ![]() There was a story about the last owner of the house having been murdered in it and his spirit remains. The Hardy Boys are riding down the road on their motorcycles on a nice sunny day and see this large house on a cliff and decide to go check it out because they had heard that it was now haunted. What do you read on a rainy day? Me, I often pick up one of my Nancy Drew, Dana Sisters, or Hardy Boys books. ![]() |
